The Crypt of Original Sin is one of the most important places in the Matera rock area, but also one of the least immediately accessible compared to the classic routes in the Sassi. It is located outside the city center, along the slope of the Gravina, and preserves a cycle of early medieval frescoes that have earned it the nickname “Sistine Chapel of the rock”.

The site’s value lies not only in the beauty of the paintings, but also in the fact that it allows us to understand a very ancient phase of the religious and artistic history of the area. The frescoes, dating back to the 8th and 9th centuries, depict biblical scenes and figures of apostles, saints, and archangels, in a simple yet highly recognizable style. Among the best-known images is that of Original Sin, from which the crypt takes its name: Adam and Eve are depicted next to the tree, in a simple but powerful narrative scene.

From a historical point of view, the crypt clearly illustrates the role of rock monasticism in the Matera area. It was not an isolated monument designed to be visited, but part of a system of settlements, caves, places of prayer and environments dug into the rock. This is the key to understanding it: not as a separate attraction, but as concrete evidence of a different way of inhabiting, praying, and organizing the territory.

The visit is also interesting because it forces you to leave the most photographed part of Matera. Here there are not only panoramic views or spectacular architecture: there is a more internal Matera, less spectacular at first glance, but fundamental to understanding the cultural depth of the city.
